RECOMMENDED SELF-DRIVE OPTIONS
Self-Drive on the Western Shores - The roads are great and you can explore the park on your own from the lodge. There are great hides and lookout points to visit that our team would be happy share with you. You need to stick to the main roads and no off road driving is permitted.
Self-Drive to the Eastern Shores - You will need to exit the Western Shores through the Dukuduku gate and reenter the Eastern Shores in St Lucia. Note that you will need to pay park entry fees to enter the eastern shores. The eastern shores have wonderful loop roads, hides and view points that you can visit.
Spend the day on the beach - You can visit the main St Lucia Beach or enter the Eastern Shores and head to Mission Rocks or Cape Vidal for soaking up some sun, doing a beach walk and swimming and snorkeling. A great opportunity to explore the biodiversity of the park that includes panoramic views, wildlife, nature and the pristine beaches within the World Heritage Site.
Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park - The Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park is an hour and 15 minutes drive from the lodge. Hilltop camp has a restaurant.
Tips on self-driving in the Park: There are picnic sites and ablutions within the park. Maps are available at the entrance to the park. We would be happy to give you a copy of a map to help you navigate through the park. Make sure you take some drinks and snacks and picnic if you explore the park as there are no restaurants in the park. Be aware of park gate closing times 6am - 6pm (April - October) or 5am - 7pm (November to March).
Additional Activities that can be booked include: Horse Riding, Deep Sea Fishing, Boat trips in St Lucia, Whale Watching, Bird watching, Cultural Shows, Emdoneni Cheetah Centre. These activities need to be booked with the independent operators.

Afternoon Wetland Game Drive (R850 pps - min 2)
Enjoy an afternoon wetland drive to get a taste of this enchanting pristine park with its immense bird and wildlife on our luxury open safari vehicles. Enjoy a drink under the magical colours of the sunset skies while absorbing the sounds and smells of the night setting in. Sightings could include giraffe, wildebeest, buffalo, zebra, hyena, waterbuck, serval, porcupine, genet, leopard, and elephant - so come prepared with camera and binoculars in hand.
Full day Boat Safari ( R2000 per person - min 2)
After breakfast, depart at 9am and depart on a safari game drive through the Western Shores to the Makakatana boat where Warwick our skipper eagerly awaits. Enjoy a 2-hour leisurely cruise along Africa’s largest estuarine system. You will see crocodiles and lots of hippos, as well as birdlife (530 Species in the area). Afterward, your guide will set up a picnic lunch served on the lakeside before returning to the lodge at 15h00. Picnic included (2 nights are needed to book this safari).
Full day Beach Safari (R2000 per person - min 2)
After breakfast, depart at 9am and take a leisurely safari game drive through the Western Shores to the Eastern Shores, where a pristine beach lies waiting along the Indian Ocean iSimangaliso coastline. Here you can enjoy a swim, snorkel, beach walks and a picnic lunch in the highest vegetated sand dunes in Africa, reaching 180m in height! After a sun-charged day, you return back to the lodge at 15h00 with salt on your skin and windswept hair to be welcomed back for high tea (2 nights are needed to book this safari).
Morning Wetland Safari Drive (R850 pp - min 2)
Enjoy a morning Western Shores game drive for you to enjoy the wakeup calls of the park before breakfast.
Wetland Night Drive (R850 pp - min 2)
Have an early dinner and end the day with a spectacular night drive looking at the stars and searching for leopard, hyena, porcupine or other nocturnal animals in the Wetland Park (08:00pm to 10:00 pm).

Makakatana Bay Lodge is on Lake St Lucia on the Western Shores. The focus is the biodiverse landscape, wildlife, birdlife and Lake St Lucia which we explore by boat on the full day boat safari where you spend about 2h30 seeking out hippo and crocodile and enjoying the spectacular estuary.
The beach is about a 30 minute drive to St Lucia. We take our guests to the iSimangaliso beaches which are within the eastern shores reserve. We combine a game drive experience with a beach experience on this full day safari.
